This subject is mainly about the materials used on site for construction such as bricks, glass, ceramic, metal and many more. The purpose of learning this subject is to develop more knowledge about the properties and manufacturing process of each particular material. In this subject, we are required to do two assignments which are individual and group assignment.

The task required to be done for group assignment is to produce presentation boards and present our gathered information clearly during tutorial class. We are required to find a space within the campus area and will further examine the building materials that fill the space and the information collected will be presented through presentation boards. The purpose of having this assignment is to introduce various types of building materials that are being used in different spaces, to create an understanding of the choices designers make in choosing the building materials based on the properties and its suitability and also to expose us to common materials used in spaces and its application. From this assignment, I have learnt that communication is important when solving out problems with group mates as it is a group assignment.

Moreover, individual assignment is also required for this subject. In this assignment, a site visit was organized. We were exposed to real construction site and it was good experience for us. The site visit had help us understand well how a construction works compared to the theory aspect that we have learnt. After the site visit, we will have to prepare a site report regarding about it and also provide information of materials that we had learnt and observed on site. 

In a nutshell, throughout this subject, I have improved my time management when doing my individual assignment to produce a better work done. As for the group assignment, I learnt that teamwork is very important as you will need to communicate and interact well with group members during discussion. I have also improved my presentation skills through this assignment.

CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY

In this subject, I have learnt about the technology used in construction. I have also learnt about the building components in construction with the aid of sketches provided during lectures. We get to learn about the structure and functions of roof, foundation, doors and so on. Besides, we were also taught about the factors affecting the site like cost of construction as well as temporary works such as accommodation for workers and storage for materials on site.

This subject basically has one individual assignment and also a group assignment. In the group assignment, we were required to choose a shopping mall and then observe the components of building like doors, staircase, roof and so on for comparison. Teamwork and communication is important throughout this assignment. After this group assignment, I have learnt that there is a need of communication between members during discussion and process of producing the report using the information collected.

Moreover, there is also an individual assignment for this subject. The report is basically about the site visit at Puchong area. The site visit for organized for the purpose of exposing students to the real construction site to provide us a better image of environment that we will work in the future as a quantity surveyor. We were able to observe huge pile cap which are used for pile foundation. The site visit is very beneficial to us as we get to see the practical aspect of construction. Due to the assignment need to be done individually, I have improved my intrapersonal skills as well as my time management to complete the assignment.

INTRODUCTION TO LAW

This is a subject covering the basic of the law in Malaysia conducted by Ms. Shoba. This subject consists of 2 tests which is 25% each and also a final exam which is 50%. There is no assignment required for this particular subject.

At the very beginning, I were taught about Malaysian Legal System and was tested in this topic for the first Mid-term test. From this topic, I have learn more about the law system in our country like how laws are made and also the pyramid court system. We also get to learn about Contract Law. This topic is an interesting yet challenging topic for us. Throughout this topic, I learn about the things that we should and should not do when producing a contract and it is very useful in the future when we work.

Besides, the final topic we learn bout is Tort Law. Tort basically is a wrong. It can either be a crime intentionally or a careless act without harm. In this topic, I have learnt Negligence which is a careless act, nuisance and also defamation which has the purpose of protecting one's reputation. In conclusion, I feel that this subject is very useful and can bring benefit to us in the future as a quantity surveyor as we will probably have to sign for contracts when working. By having the basic knowledge of law related to contract and malaysia legal system, I am able to sue a person if needed as well as a defence to protect my rights when working under contracts.

MEASUREMENT 1

Introduction 

This is the main subject of this semester which can be considered as one of the most important subject as we will probably use mainly of what we had learnt from measurement 1 on our jobs in the future. For this subject, we have two assignments which are divided into individual and group followed by a mid-term test as well as a final exam. The first assignment is to calculate the quantity and the cost of the material needed in construction. In this assignment, we are divided into groups consisting of 7 group member. Throughout this group assignment, we will have to learn to read technical drawings in order to calculate the materials and cost for construction. Moreover, I have learn about taking off list, excavation and earthwork, concrete work, formwork, reinforcement bars, mesh fabric reinforcement and so on. As this is a group assignment, I have learn to work together with my group mates as well as improving my interpersonal skill by communicating with group members when solving any problems faced during assignment. 

Besides, the second assignment is an individual assignment which is preparing a site report. This site report includes 3 subjects which are Measurement 1, Construction Technology and Building Materials. To prepare this report, a site visit was organized for us. The site is located at Puchong area which is 30 minutes away from campus. During the site visit, i get to observe how the workers work and the working process of construction. I have also learnt the safety precautions need to be taken on site such as wearing safety helmet. For this assignment, I get the opportunity to see the practical aspect of construction work and able to compare between those i have learnt in the aspect of theory. Furthermore, by preparing this site report, I have learnt to manage well of my time and also to present the information collected from site visit in an organized manner.
