SITE SURVEYING

When I first got in touch with this module, my first impression of it was mathematics, simple mathematics. However, after that we were given lectures on more complicated topics such as leveling and honestly I was a bit clueless at the very beginning about this module because it was not what I thought it was and would be. This subject was quite difficult and complicated for me as well as challenging. This subject focuses on more to field work and how to use the machines such as theodolite. For this module, there will be a mid-term test and group assignments where two lab reports need to be done. The reports are mainly done using the data we have collected using the instruments during field work.

This subject overall involves group work and outdoor field work. We are exposed to machines which are professional and need to be handled with care. Our lecturer is experienced and patient when conducting us during field work. At first when we were exposed to the apparatus, he explained clearly on how to use the tripod and install the machines to be used for measuring the angles. I truly appreciate the knowledge he had share with us during lectures and tutorials. This module also interests me as it involves field work at outdoors which gives us experience on what our future construction site work would be like. For example, we might need to be under the hot sun and despite the hot sun we must interact with group members in order to take accurate readings and complete the task we are given. This also improves my interpersonal skills as well as communication skills.

BUILDING SERVICES 1

This module is basically about the components and systems which run through the building either inside or outside which completes the building. The topics we will cover are ventilation, telecommunication, drainage, storm water system and many more. As we can see, it relates more to the system installed and apply to a building to provide us more knowledge about our living environment.

For the task in this module, we are required to form a group consisting of six persons and prepare a report of a specific topic we have chosen and present our information gathered on the report clearly during tutorial class. The topic of our assignment is Ventilation Problems in Heritage Building. Through a deeper research, I have understand more and gain more knowledge of the problems faced by heritage building and the ways to solve it as well as natural ventilation system itself. Moreover, the most common purpose of having to accomplish this assignment is to improve our teamwork and communication by interacting with the other group members. Other than that, this group assignment also requires a formal presentation of our information and research that we have done. In that way, I have also improve my presentation skills and have tried my best to present clearly in front of the class.

I have learnt a lot through lectures and tutorial classes given by our lecturer, Ms Zhermaica. She is a dedicated lecturer and has given us much exercises to practice during every tutorial class as practice makes perfect. Her explanation during tutorial class and lectures of the topics gives us a big help in assignment and mid-term test. Through this subject, I have learnt more about the system and building structure which we came across almost every day in our living environment but have not given any concern. In conclusion, building services is an interesting module which provides us more knowledge on how a building works. I hope this useful additional knowledge can bring benefit to me in my future career.

CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY 2

This module is mainly about the support systems and elements used for a building during construction such as scaffolding, piling, diaphragm wall and etc. It is a very interesting subject as we can learn and gain more knowledge of the technology used during construction and have a basic knowledge about the construction process which we will witness more in the future as a quantity surveyor.

For construction technology 2, there will be a mid-term test, one individual assignment and one group assignment. For the individual assignment, we were given 20 drawings to complete. These drawings help us in understanding more about the components of support system and building structure. As for group assignment, it will consist of 5 group members and the task required is we have to produce a 20 minutes long of video about the construction process and our topic was scaffolding.

In a nutshell, this module provides us a lot of knowledge about construction process and the technology used. We had to visit construction sites for our group assignment in order to obtain the image and video of scaffolding. Therefore, I have gain more knowledge and experience and also have an image of how a construction site will look like in the future. Besides, the things I have learnt from group assignment is that teamwork and communication can never be less to produce a good project effectively and efficiently. Throughout the module, last but not least, we are lucky to have an experienced lecturer, Mr Chiew who have shared a lot of his experience and knowledge during tutorials as well as lectures. Moreover, he had also taught us about the good attitude that we should have to be successful in the future in our career. In overall, it provides us a lot of knowledge not only in construction process, also the general knowledge and attitude that we should have in our life.

MEASUREMENT 2

For this semester, just like the previous semester measurement is also the core subject which is known as measurement 2. In this semester, this subject includes topics of work above the ground. We will be calculating work such as walls, external walls as well as internal walls, ceiling, staircase and many more. This provides us more chances to expand our knowledge on measurement principles.

For this subject, we will be having mid-term test, one assignment and one final exam. Mid-term test would be 25% in total as well as the assignment. Final exam stands the most mark which is 50%.

Throughout this module, I find that it is very important and challenging as this subject will be very useful in the future for us. I have learnt a lot of things and has gain more knowledge on measurement.  For example, there will be dividing strips if there are changes of floor finishes and drops at certain areas and need to be given attention when doing the calculation. In this module, there is a group assignment which requires around six members. The descriptions in taking off for the topics in this semester are much longer than what we had learnt, so it was quite challenging and it made my memorizing skills improved. Since this is a group assignment, communication and teamwork is the most important element that I have learnt to produce our work more effectively and efficiently. Last but not least, I would like to thank our lecturer for this module, Ms Habizah for helping us so much in completing our assignment and studies. This module has brought us a lot of useful information and knowledge which is beneficial to us as a future quantity surveyor.
