BUILDING SERVICES AND CIVIL ENGINEERING QUANTITIES

Our last module regarding measurement in our quantity surveyor course, Building Services and Civil Engineering Quantities which is also known as Measurement 5. This module is divided into two parts and taught by two different lecturers. One of it is the measurement of building services and mechanical works such as Electrical Works, Cold Water, Sanitary Installation and many more, lectured by Ms Laura. By learning this module, we are able to visualize the drawings and piping layout from the schematic drawings. The other part is taught by Mr Simon more on the measurement of civil engineering works like demolition, Site Investigation Works and Earthworks. Through this part, we are also able to learn on how to read, understand Mycesmm and describe the items based on the drawings given. Mycesmm is used by mechanical and electrical engineering.

In this module, there are three assessments which are one group assignment, one mid-term test, and the final exam. Mid term exam is held to cope with the topics learnt while using Mycesmm. We had to understand the way of using MyCESMM (Malaysian Civil Engineering Standard Method of Measurement) and also the format when taking off. Besides, students are required to complete a group assignment with a group of 5 people. The group assignment was on the installation of the cold water system. Each and everyone of us has given the divided parts of the assignment by our group leader. Although each of us doing different parts, but whenever we encounter some difficulties we can consult others to discuss for the solution of the problems faced. Overall, the assignment was done efficiently. Therefore, teamwork is very important in the process of completing a group assignment.

After the mid term test and group assignment, a final examination is going to be held after 14 weeks of lectures. The final exam consist of 50% of overall marks. In a nutshell, I have understand more on the measurement of building services and had the opportunity to learn civil engineering works by using Mycesmm.
