FACILITY MANAGEMENT

By choosing this elective module, I came across with a new occupation which I had never heard before which is known as VS as our lecturer was experience in VS. Moreover, it opened my eyes to another management of property’s facility. This subject includes only a mid-term test and a group assignment. This group assignment is basically to do a report on the design facilities, management status and existing facilities followed by the property photographs of the required building. In this report, we were also required to conduct a site study on swimming pool according to the brief.

In conclusion, I have gained some knowledge about the career our lecturer mentioned about which is VS. Furthermore, I learnt about communication skill is very important for group assignment. As a group, we will have to think about the transportation and ways to find the required building such as petrol station that has more than 10 pumps around Puchong area. One of my member provide transportation by fetching us to search for required buildings while me and my other group mate take photos of the property and therefore I realize the importance of team dynamics and everyone should contribute for the group in order to complete the task. We faced a lot of difficulties when obtaining the building management approval for taking photographs and I have learnt to analyze the problem and arrive at effective solutions. Last but not least, I understand more about the swimming pool system and its components through the case study.

CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY 3

Drawings for individual assignment

Since semester 1, we learn about the basic knowledge of construction through Construction Technology 1. For this semester, we have covered about the topics for Construction Technology 3 which includes industrialized building system (IBS), tunnel formwork, retaining wall and so on. These are all the important basic practical and technical knowledge of construction on site which we might come across in our projects in future.

For this module, an individual task followed by a group task is assigned to us to improve our knowledge based on what we had learnt during lecture and tutorials. The individual assignment is to draw and sketch 20 drawings about the components or connection of basic components. For the group assignment, we were required to form a group and create a video regarding of any topic that we have chose. Furthermore, there is also mid term test as well as a final exam for the subject.

After going through the lectures and tutorials by Mr Chiew, I have learnt a lot and gain a lot of knowledge about how different components and formwork are formed during constructions from the simplest to more complicated method of construction. From the individual assignment, I’ve learnt more about the details of connection by sketching the drawings. I manage to learn independently and and be self-reliant which improves my intrapersonal skills. As for group assignment, me and my group members have chosen IBS as our topic for the video assignment. Through the making of video, I had a good experience on how to edit a video followed by the narration of my part in the video which had also improve my digital literacy skills as well as communication skills in either presenting in the video or during discussions with other group members to complete a task. This had really help us a lot in understanding construction process more and will be useful for us in our future working environment.

MEASUREMENT 3

The core subject for this semester is also about measuring but the only difference is the materials and components. I have learnt about the taking off for various types of openings like windows and door such as timber louvred window, metal frame door, timber panel door and so on. There will be a mid-term test which is 25%, a combination of group and individual assignment which consists of 25% and also 50% of final exam.

Thanks to our lecturer, I have not only learnt about taking off but also understand more of how the frame and glazing are installed as he explained to us in class and making the whole lecture more interesting. By explaining the process of installation make it easier for us to complete our taking off of the openings.

I learnt a lot from this subject and gained more knowledge on the measurement for different types of openings which is very useful for me in the future especially in my career. While doing the assignment, I have improved my interpersonal skills during discussions and understand the power of teamwork. Moreover, we have to solve problems during measurement with effective solutions when completing the task by thinking critically. As for the individual part, we were taught to use the new software called Glodon. I find this software very useful. It can build a 3D model of a whole building and also make taking off easier. It is a very good experience for me and I can also improve my skills on digital literacy by using Glodon software.
