STRUCTURES

This module is majority on calculation and I find it challenging for me because it is focused on physics and calculation similar to engineering mathematics. The topics we have learnt throughout this semester are Introduction to Engineering Principles and Structures, Forces and Equilibrium, Shear Force Diagram and so on which is basically to calculate the force and moment on the construction components like beams, trusses and columns.

The assessment for this module are 25% mid-term test on the topics covered from week 1 to week 6, individual assignment 25% which is done in lecture class to use graphical method for trusses analysis, and also a final examination.

From this module, I learnt more about the structural systems on columns, beams and trusses as well as the importance of it to a building and have improved my problem solving skills while doing the assignments and exercises as our lecturer, Mr Chai provided us good explanation and has good patience for guiding us throughout this module. As a quantity surveyor, it is important to understand and develop the knowledge on basic concept of structural works in buildings so it can bring benefits to us in the future to help us in controlling the cost such as reducing excessive structural support to save cost. Therefore, I find this subject very interesting and useful to us in our future.
